On my way off to Mbale, Uganda....but first New York!

My adventure East of everywhere I call home and all who I love began yesterday when I got on a plane out of Portland direct to NYC. Three nights in NY isn't much, but I'm going to do as much as my tired feet and eyes can take!
I am staying with my friend Jedd I met in Spain last year, who is a cook at a fancy restaurant in Manhattan. His apartment is just as hip and funky as the Brooklyn neighborhood it sits in. I already feel completely in my element surrounded by art, museums and great beer.
Today Jedd and I woke up early so he could show me the cheese shop where he buys the cheese for the restaurant (which he actually had spent some time in France making), then we ventured through soho and Tribeca to check out his work, then I was off to China Town and the Brooklyn Bridge. But my highlight of the day was definitely the hours I spent in the Museum of Modern Art. As I ventured through the rooms of Jackson Pollock, Picasso, Dali, Van Gogh, Andy Warhol I had a strange feeling of confusion...Am I still in the US? I felt like I was whisked back to Europe, which is a great feeling.
Then I got suddenly very tired, and as I intended to head back for a nap, instead my tired feet and wandering eyes somehow drug me another 40 blocks through central park and up to Times Square; where I apparently saw some famous kids (I could tell from the screaming 14 year old girls) God I miss the days when boy bands still made my heart melt. Well I guess some man bands still do, but it's not as fun when you are old enough to realize that no matter how many flower petals you pick they still won't magically love you.
So to all my friends and family who read this, your girl is off to a great start, and you are all in my thoughts...and don't worry, I'm being safe!
